London-based designer Zoe Jervoise looks set for a promising 2011. With her eponymous collection, Jervoise, Zoe has showcased her skills for creating unique and distinctive one-offs.
Renewal is at the heart of Jervoise, giving vintage denim or leather jackets, shirts, waistcoats, trousers and t-shirts a new lease of live. Adorned with richly coloured tapestry, the distinctive Jervoise style is influenced by the wearer. Most of Zoe’s clients to date include musicians and artists – The Horrors inspired hauntingly, gothic images; One Night Only influenced sparkly and flamboyant patterns whilst Marina and the Diamonds was the inspiration behind bright, geometric designs.
In Zoe’s case, genetics undoubtedly played a part in her creative upbringing. Inspired by her mother’s art and tapestry designs collected from around the world, Zoe grew up in a world of diverse styles, colour, and quality. Surrounded by the countryside and 60s-inspired bold Indian designs, the tapestries take on an almost mythical nature. It is certainly unusual to see such a traditional technique applied so effortlessly to cast-off clothing, and with the skill involved, each item successfully combines art and fashion, style and function.
As well as gaining inspiration from musicians and artists, the strong signature style of Jervoise is also attracting their support. Exposure on the NME tour generated fans in Golden Silvers, Local Natives, and Marina and the Diamonds who went on to commission a range of bespoke t-shirts. Jervoise can also list George Craig of One Night Only and Burberry fame, Jervoise Designed all of ONO’s Tour Merchandise and Latest Album artwork. Singer songwriter Ellie Goulding not only Commissioned her own personalized jacket, but also Jervoise designed Ellie’s Trekstock Charity T-shirt. Harry Potter Actress Emma Waston and actor Jamie Campbell Bower and bands such as White Lies and The Vaccines amongst fans.
Understanding both the need for renewal and demand for innovative design, it is clear that for the Jervoise label, tapestries are just the beginning.
